Little White Houses

Here is your opportunity to own your own beautiful Emily Dickinson display.  Peter Krasznekewicz, the creator of the beautiful white cottages with Dickenson poetry stenciled on the side seen displayed around the Valley this year, donated the houses to Pioneer Valley Habitat for Humanity.  PVHabitat is selling the “Little White Houses” to interested individuals and businesses for $250 in order to raise money for the next Habitat home built in the Valley.

Peter came up with the concept for the exhibit after his freshman year. Partially inspired by the works of Bulgarian public artist Christo and partially by his early exposure to the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Peter developed the idea of creating stylized white houses with quotes from Dickinson’s poetry.

Each of the forty white houses is approximately seven feet long, four feet wide, and eight feet tall, made from Forest Stewardship Council certified and formaldehyde-free plywood panels. On every house, Peter stenciled lines of Dickinson’s poetry, spreading the words of each line around all surfaces in different font sizes—essentially “wrapping” the houses in poetry, using them as canvasses for thought and contemplation.

The shape of the house is a reflection of the traditional New England barns that dot the Western Massachusetts landscape, the region Dickinson was obsessed with and inspired by. The Little White Houses provide a means for people to slow down and perhaps see the environment the way Dickinson saw it.

While the houses are beautiful and thought-provoking as a piece of art, they could also serve as garden storage sheds, or a child’s playhouse, simply by cutting a door in either end.

To be alive is power.
Old age comes on suddenly, and not gradually as is thought.
Expectation is contentment – gain satiety.
Conventionality is not morality.
It is better to be the hammer than the anvil.
Luck is not chance -- It’s Toil --
